Iced Turmeric Latte (Golden Milk)
Ray and I recently moved into a new apartment. With all the stress of moving and cleaning (dust, chemicals, mental stress), we both feel drained.
Normally, I would make a hot glass of turmeric milk to boost my immune system, but because it’s summer, I made a quick iced golden latte.
Why Drink Golden Milk?
Turmeric has anti inflammatory properties, which are great for building immunity or fighting off viral infections like colds.
It’s also said to relieve heartburn or bloating.
Turmeric is also said to be tri-doshic, which means it can balance Kapha, Vata, and Pitta doshas. I’m by no means an expert on Ayurveda, so if you are interested in what dosha you have, learn more here.
Time: 3 minutes
- 1 cup of milk (can substitute with coconut, almond, or cashew milk for vegan)
- 1 tbsp of ground turmeric
- Pinch of ginger powder
- Dash of black pepper
- Dash of cinnamon
- 1 tsp of honey (or more if you like sweeter)
Blend ingredients together. You can also whisk if you don’t have a blender. The turmeric is less soluable in cold milk, but you will still get the benefit. Pour over ice and enjoy!
Why pepper? Turmeric has low “bioavailability,” which means our bodies can’t absorb very much of it. Black pepper increases how our bodies absorb turmeric so it’s a must! Milk (or some kind of fat) also increases the absorption.
Bottom line - You won’t get the same benefits putting a spoonful in a glass of water.
Beware! Turmeric can stain light colors easily. Don’t be messy if you’re wearing a white shirt!
